On the surface, it appeared to be one of the country’s largest art thefts: millions of dollars worth of Andy Warhol silk-screens purportedly stolen in 2009 from the L.A. residence of Seattle art collector Richard Weisman.
But in the wake of the heist, Weisman, now 74, raised suspicions when he abruptly canceled his insurance claim for the 10 pieces, which were insured for $25 million.
Insurance fraud costs insurance companies billions of dollars annually.
At the time, Weisman said he understood that people might view it as strange for him to walk away from so much money but said he simply couldn’t stand the thought of insurance investigators poring through his personal records and interrogating his family and friends.
“They turn you into a suspect. I just finally told them, ‘I’m not going to go through it for three to five years. Forget it,’ ” Weisman said. “That’s the only reason, and it’s a good enough reason.”
Weisman said he feels lucky he’s wealthy enough to withstand the loss.
Because he won’t be collecting on his policy, Chartis insurance withdrew the $1 million reward for the artwork. Chartis had offered the reward anonymously through the Police Department.
Tracking each development is LAPD Detective Don Hrycyk, who for the past 15 years has taken on the unusual task of investigating high-profile art thefts.
“It’s a lot of money he gave up,” Hrycyk said. “It’s one of those puzzling aspects you have to take into account when you do your investigation.”
His family member took them probably because he raped her childhood friends in NYV. He is a pedophile predator

Hard to believe he got away with it, but with no cell phones in the 80’s, and all that money, he groomed and bought his way out of so many situations…..

Richards daughter stole them- probably because he raped many of her friends in the 80s in NYC

I hung out with Richard all the time in the late 90’s and 2000’s in Los Angeles, attended numerous parties at his Seattle home, spent the night at his house in LA and Seattle as a FRIEND, went to sporting events with him, and NOT ONE TIME did he EVER try anything on me. He was a great friend to me and my Husband, a true gentleman!! I was 27 at the time and he was in his 60’s and yes I am and was very good looking. Yes he did like to hang around good looking people but that was the extent of it and I don’t see any fault in this.
Every party of his I attended I not ONCE saw him hitting on any of the guests and many were my age at the time. There wasn’t one morsel of suspicion, and I have seen it all at these LA parties. Richard has never been anything else but a great, decent, trustworthy upstanding gentleman. My Husband and I adore him and we never have, and never will be swingers or entertain any type of inappropriate behavior, much less sexual. The Richard you all are speaking of is not the Richard Weisman.
Your comments make zero sense. Why would someone that was upset that her “friends were raped” in the 1980’s all of a sudden many years later decide to get back at him and steal a few pieces of artwork? That is not even a payback? He has enough money that he doesn’t need those pieces and his Daughter knows it! I mean are you people for real???? Apparently you all have zero clue about Richard, nor do you know him at all. The fact that you are accusing while you are guessing, and haven’t any true facts as to what really happened, well that is disgusting!! You should be ashamed of yourselves!

He left nyc to restart. He was driven out by parents of a girl he raped. You knew the older charmer. The truth is what it is your opinion means nothing

Wow. I don’t think you understand who your defending. He widely escorted teens around ny in the 80s. You know when an adult betrays the innocence of young people the scars are deep and never forgotten. He wasn’t who you think he was. He used his money to overpower people and maintain control. He confused the young girls but as women we are clear on his pathological Illness.
